Molecular thermodynamics for scaling prediction: Case of membrane distillation

Membrane distillation (MD) for water treatment is significantly impaired by the scaling of dissolved minerals. The type and content minerals generally measured as total solids (TDS) in hypersaline brines not only reduce MD flux but also control behavior on membrane surface. scaling-induced pore blockage further reduces eventually leads to wetting. problem even more pronounced produced (PW) it contains 3–7 times higher TDS concentrations, compared seawater. Theoretically, necessary conditions a salt precipitate can be traced from its solubility product constant activity constituents within solution. Therefore, comprehensive thermodynamic model represent electrolyte predict precipitation different salts complex solution like PW. We pursued Nonrandom Two Liquid Theory (eNRTL), state-of-the-art model, address PW fluid phase equilibria. With fully parameterized eNRTL we predicted precipitations two samples results against experimental findings. Furthermore, forecast response change concentration temperature operation.
